Rihanna Unleashes the Creeper Phatty: A Bold Return to Sneaker Culture

  • by

Rihanna’s iconic Creeper is making a triumphant return, and this time, it’s not just a comeback – it’s a statement. The Creeper Phatty, imagined, designed, and named by Rihanna herself, takes the classic Creeper to new heights with an oversized design, stacked gum sole, and vibrant pops of color. Available in three colors for all ages and genders, the Creeper Phatty is a full family affair that embraces extra confidence, extra style, and extra everything.

Rihanna’s vision for the Creeper Phatty was to bring back the beloved Creeper in a bold and culturally relevant way. The original Creeper, launched in September 2015 as a platformed version of PUMA’s iconic Suede sneaker, earned the title of Shoe of the Year by Footwear News in 2016. This silhouette not only transformed sneaker culture but also played a pivotal role in enhancing PUMA’s brand impact and relevance over the past decade.

The Creeper Phatty boasts a suede wrap, a padded and debossed formstrip, a debossed Fenty logo on the tongue, laces with gold aglets, and a distinctive stacked gum sole. Available in three striking colorways – classic black and white, vibrant blue and green, and a captivating lavender and cherry red combination – the Creeper Phatty is a testament to Rihanna’s commitment to reinventing the OG Creeper.

“We took our OG Creeper and made it bigger and badder,” Rihanna declared. “When designing the Creeper Phatty, we wanted to reinvent the OG Creeper that was loved by so many. It’s a classic silhouette that has been missed, so its return had to be bigger.”

Rihanna’s creative direction extends beyond the design itself. The FENTY x PUMA campaign, shot by Philippa Price, explores the juxtaposition between a creep and a Phatty attitude, highlighting the oversized and vibrant elements of the shoe.

Maria Valdes, Chief Product Officer at PUMA, emphasized the universal appeal of the Creeper and the excitement surrounding its return. “The original Creeper changed the game for us,” Valdes stated. “We knew it was time to bring it back. This shoe has universal appeal, and we’ve seen tremendous consumer excitement for the silhouette to return. We are excited to not only be able to build upon the existing silhouette with the Creeper Phatty but also expand our offering to the entire family.”

Sneaker enthusiasts and fashion-forward individuals alike can mark their calendars for the global release of the FENTY x PUMA Creeper Phatty on November 30, 2023, at 10 am EST, available on puma.com and through global retailers, including Foot Locker.
