It’s the end of an era. Hallmark’s hit daytime talk show Home & Family has been cancelled. The news comes just shy of the cast going back to film season 9 next week. We’ve got some details about the surprising news below, including Kym Douglas’ reaction. Keep reading for all that information.
While there’s no official reason reported, it’s implied that the show was impacted by the pandemic. Much like a lot of other TV programs, Home & Family‘s filming schedule was deeply thrown off due to COVID-19. According to Deadline, they first shut down last March, then resumed in September 2020. But, they were once again halted in December.
Since new episodes stopped airing January 4, encores have been airing in its time slot. Apparently, the cast is set to go back to filming on March 29. Unfortunately, it’ll be for their ninth and final season. The new season is set to premiere on Monday, April 5 in a one-hour, 3 day a week format. A Hallmark Channel spokesperson said that “the program’s final episode airs Wednesday, August 4.”
The talk show films in Los Angeles, California and has been hosted by Debbie Matenopoulos and Cameron Mathison since 2018. Previously, Feeling the Vibe reported that Debbie co-hosted with Mark Steines. Topics have ranged from arts & crafts or home improvements to lifestyle and fitness tips. Home & Family has been nominated for 6 Daytime Emmys, the most recent being in 2020.
Home & Family‘s Kym Douglas posted a lovely tribute to the show on her Instagram. She wrote that: “…our beloved show @homeandfamilytv is going away. 😳 It’ll be with a heavy heart that we begin filming our final season next week. Even in this tough time I am filled with gratitude when I think of the time I’ve been with this wonderful show.”
She really enjoyed sharing her life over the years with fans too. Kym shared the good and bad; the ups and the downs. From getting married to battling cancer, she’s been through a lot onscreen and off during her time with Home & Family. She added that: “Although this may be bittersweet I can’t help but smile when I think of all the memories on that wonderful set.” That’s what she wants to remember about her years on the Hallmark show.

While the rest of the cast haven’t posted about the news, it’s worth noting just how fast things can change. Cameron Mathison posted about his excitement of Home & Family being renewed. That news came in July 2020. Now, not even a year later, it’s bittersweet.
While co-host, Debbie Matenopoulos has yet to make an official announcement about the daytime show ending, she did share some sweet behind the scenes videos. Earlier in February, Debbie said she had been looking through her phone and found videos of her daughter Alexandra in 2017 when she would bring her to work very early in the morning. First stop – The Insider and next , Home & Family.
“O M Geeeeeeeee….I was doing a photo cleanup of my phone this weekend and found some of the most amazing videos that melted my heart. This is one from Jan. 2017 when Alexandra would come to work with me most days. We would leave super early (4:30 am) and go to The Insider @cbstv. When I wrapped there, we would drive to @universalstudioslot for Home & Family. She was 2 years and 2 months old and she would copy everything I said on both shows. It was SO FUNNY and It’s giving me all the feels. Listen to her little raspy voice. I just want to squeeze her so tight. Where did the time go? 👶 #baby #toddler #theygrowupsofast,” Debbie commented.
You can catch the premiere of Home & Family season 9 on Monday, April 5 at 10 AM ET, only on Hallmark Channel. It’ll air Monday-Wednesday from 10-11 AM ET, per their new format.
