Everything We Know About Netflix’s New Comedy “Never Have I Ever”

Netflix’s newest teen comedy “Never Have I Ever” co-created by Mindy Kaling gets a release date and teaser trailer. Get all the details on the series inside!

Netflix‘s all-new teen comedy series Never Have I Ever is coming soon to streaming services everywhere. With the company’s other series like Sex Education and On My Block, this show is sure to fit right in on telling the stories of teenage life from new perspectives. With charm and spunk, the series definitely has co-creator Mindy Kaling’s name written all over it. Keep reading below for even more details on this fresh new show.

What’s Never Have I Ever about?

Never Have I Ever centers around an Indian-American teen named Devi, who has a little bit of a short fuse. She finds herself desperately wanting that normal high school experience: boys, parties, the whole nine yards. At the top of her “wish list” is: attending a party, having the classic “hot, dumb” boyfriend, someone who’s preferably on a sports team at her school.

Of course these things can’t really happen without a little bit of fun…and missteps, because let’s be honest: what high schooler ever went through life without a hitch or two?

Who else will be featured on the show?

Portraying the lead role of Devi is Canadian newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishnan; while Poorna Jagannathan (of Big Little Lies) will play Nalini, Devi’s mom. Richa Shukla will play Kamala, Devi’s cousin from India.

Maitreyi only auditioned after some convincing from her friend, who insisted she would be “perfect” for the role. Guess her friend was right!

Portraying other high school students and Devi’s friends are: Benjamin Norris as Trent, Ramona Young as Eleanor, Martin Martinez as Oliver, Jaren Lewison as Ben, and Christina Kartchner as Eve.

You may have seen Benjamin in the TV series The Pregame as Connor; and Ramona in The Legends of Tomorrow as Mona Wu.

Adam Shapiro will portray Mr. Shapiro, a teacher at the California high school Devi attends. You can check out a few photos of some of the principle cast members below:

Any other details?

Yes, you read that right from our introduction: Mindy Kaling of The Office and The Mindy Project is a co-creator of the new series, and get this – it’s actually based on her life! According to Variety, Mindy revealed that Netflix approached her about doing a series based on “a young Mindy.”

Instead of doing one about her life in the 80’s, Mindy wanted to do a modern-day telling of an Indian-American teen. And ta-da: Never Have I Ever was born. Mindy even took to social media to cast her actors – the names above are all relatively new and/or unknown. We can’t wait to see them light up the small screen!

Speaking of which, yes there is a release date. Netflix dropped the teaser trailer late last week, and announced the official date to be April 27. You can see it in full below:
