The “Queen of Christmas” is back: Candace Cameron Bure is already at work on her newest Hallmark Channel holiday movie called The Christmas Contest. This time, she’s joined by her former Fuller House co-star John Brotherton. It’s the first time the two will reunite onscreen since their hit Netflix series ended in 2020. The news brought major excitement for Fuller House #TeamMatt fans, who rooted for Candace’s DJ and John’s Matt to be together. Now, the duo will star in The Christmas Contest. We’ve got details on their new film below, including some plot details, and other cast.
The Christmas Contest: Candace Cameron Bure and John Brotherton Reunite
The Christmas Contest “follows exes Lara and Ben as they compete in a Christmas contest to win money for charity. The city watches them battle and choose what is more important, victory or love” according to US Weekly. Candace Cameron Bure plays Lara, John Brotherton portrays Ben, and Barbara Niven will also star. The release date has yet to be announced.
Candace posted the good news on her Instagram account, alongside a photo of she and John, presumably on set of the film. She wrote: “Cat’s out of the bag! @johnbrotherton and I are together again! If you were #TeamMatt on Fuller House, you’re not going to want to miss our new Christmas movie 🎄! A Christmas Contest will air this holiday season on @hallmarkchannel . Once again, developed and produced by the incomparable @jimheadjr (this marks our 20th movie producing together) and me!”

Her Full/Fuller House co-star Marla Sokoloff commented “I guess this was bound to happen, Deej. love you guys!” Candace’s onscreen dad Bob Saget wrote an enthusiastic “YES!!” Longtime fans of the show will remember that DJ (Cameron Bure) was engaged to Matt (Brotherton) before she and Steve (Scott Weinger) found each other again.
As mentioned above in Candace’s caption, the movie is developed and produced by Jim Head, who’s worked with Candace before on Hallmark movies. He and Candace worked on A Shoe Addict’s Christmas, If I Only Had Christmas, and the Aurora Teagarden Mysteries franchise, such as How to Con a Con and ‘Til Death Do Us Part.
Jim’s worked on other Hallmark Channel films too, including 2014’s The Nine Lives of Christmas. He’s in the midst of producing the sequel The Nine Kittens of Christmas, which has original stars Brandon Routh, Kimberley Sustad and Gregory Harrison returning. Cross Country Christmas and A Blue Ridge Mountain Christmas are a couple titles you may know from him as well.
Besides the story of the movie, we also love looking at the amazing fashions seen in each movie! Candace wears styles from various designers in addition to her own line from QVC and Dayspring. Get the details here!
