Disney Orders ‘High School Musical’ TV Series – Get The Scoop on the Show Inside!

Get ready to sing and dance High School Musical fans! Disney has officially started production on the television series reboot of the beloved HSM trilogy. Keep reading below to get all the info on everything related to High School Musical: The Musical!

Who Has Been Cast in the Series?

The all-new cast includes: Joshua Bassett (Grey’s Anatomy), Olivia Rodrigo (Bizaardvark), Kate Reinders (Modern Family and Ugly Betty), Sofia Wylie (Andi Mack), Matt Cornett (Bella and the Bulldogs), Dara Reneé (black-ish), Julia Lester (Mom), Frankie A. Rodriguez (Modern Family), Larry Saperstein (Fan Girl and The First Wives Club), and Mark St. Cyr (Marshall and Doomsday).

Joshua Bassett will portray Ricky, a skater boy who decides to audition for his school’s first-ever musical production to impress his ex-girlfriend, Nini. Olivia Rodrigo will play Nini, a theater girl who needs a little confidence boost. Kate Reinders will play Miss Jenn, the new energetic drama teacher who loves musicals.

Sofia Wylie will be Gina, a superstar transfer student who refuses to be ‘just an understudy’ in the school’s musical. Matt Cornett will portray E.J., the boy who struggles to live up to his picture-perfect expectations – but will never admit that his jock lifestyle has taken its toll. He wants the lead in the musical, and will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Dara Reneé will play Kourtney, the makeup-loving BFF of Nini, who will work on the crew of the musical in the costume department.

Julia Lester will portray Ashlyn, E.J’s cousin who is an aspiring songwriter. Frankie A. Rodriguez will be Carlos, the musical’s choreographer. Larry Saperstein will play Big Red, the funny third wheel of Nini and Ricky. And last but certainly not least, Mark St. Cyr will portray Mr. Mazzara, the high school’s STEM teacher who often disagrees with Miss Jenn about student activities.

What Will the Show Be About and What Can We Expect From It?

The TV series picks up almost 15 years after the original High School Musical movie aired, and will follow students and teachers at East High as they put on their school’s first-ever musical. Friendships will be tested, romances will blossom, and rivalries will battle on as they all gear up for the big opening night.

Fans can expect a variety of musical numbers, from reimagined HSM movie classics to brand-new songs. There will be 10 episodes of this new series, and they will be available on Disney’s very own streaming service called Disney+ (which is expected in late 2019). Filming has officially begun this month and takes place in Salt Lake City, Utah at the real-life location known as East High School.
