Questions
Please
tell us about your family and background. Do you have any
siblings? How old are you and when is your birthday?
I'm the youngest of 4. My brother is Johnny and he's married to Amy
with one
son. Monique is 28, daughter Noelle, then there's Laticia who is 27
with two
children, Victoria and Gwenny, then me, I'm the youngest of four at 24.
My birthday
is November 14th.
We
read
that you grew up in Dallas - Ft. Worth area, we actually have relatives
that live there. Is this where you live now?
Yes I do live here now. I still have a lot of relatives in
the area,
about a block north.
We
read
that you
used to perform with your three brothers and sisters. What
songs
did you sing? Any particularly memorable stories from back
then that you would like to share with our readers?
We were always travelling on the
road
and my dad would teach the four of
us how to harmonize. We had to know how to blend our voices
and that
was something we would do on the road, a little story. My
dad, aunt, and
uncle all sing, but nobody sings professionally, just me and I've been
doing so for
five years.
We
hear
you're a big motown fan. What is your favorite motown song?
"Jesus Children of America" by Stevie Wonder.
How
long were you in the group "Sons of Harmony?" What was that experience like?
I was in the boy band for two years. It was actually meant to
be
a joke. KIIS FM was holding auditions in Dallas, Tx to find new talent,
we were a boy band and signed to a record table. We opened
for/worked with Jessica Simpson, 98 Degrees, and Pink in Texas.
It was great to learn from these artists, learn about
adaptability. I saw Jessica one time while we were in "Sons
of
Harmony" in Texas
and
she lost her voice but still went out there and sang, that taught me a
lot of what it's like to be a professional singer, how you have to
adapt to different situations.
How
do
you set yourself apart from other male solo artists, what makes you
different?
I want to write about stuff that's
more
real,
I learn a lot from my
travels and just put that reality into song and word form. Letting
others know about it, and if they want to take it they can take it.
I'm trying to be
very true not from just my circumstances but from many others'
circumstances. It's has a Latin flavor to it, a Latin pop
sound.I
like to experience a
lot of different cultures, it's something my parents instilled in me.
My music
is adaptable to different cultures and different countries.
If
I'm in
Germany I'll put in something that's up tempo dance song, if I'm in
France I'll
put insomething like a love ballad. If I'm in London I'll
definitely make
sure the music has a pulse and a beat. Here in the United
States
it's
tricky, because I want to make it different, and they expect something
big and new, so I have to make it different but still make it me.
Your
song "If You Were Mine" is such a sweet ballad. Did you
have any part in writing it? What is the inspiration behind
it?
My managers felt this was going to
be a
good
first song to step forward with. It really can relate to a lot of
people going through relationship
problems, where a guy is treating their girl badly. I have
heard
some guys say
"thank you for helping me get this girl with your song" or a "girl
would say
"thank you for helping me to connect with my boyfriend on
this
song." I've even heard that it's
an anniversary
song for some people.
We
also
saw the music video for "If You Were Mine" any stories you'd like to share with our readers
regarding that experience?
It was my first video and it took one day to record. We
worked from
6:00 am - 9:00 pm filming. The girl in the video is my good
friend,
Rachel who I've known for two years. She's a really sweet
girl,
really
independent. We didn't even really have to ask it was more of
me
asking her "how's your mom, what's going on with your boyfriend, etc."
What
do
you like to do for fun in your free time?
Go running, swim, rock climb, make music, hang out with friends,
play guitar, piano, mess around with pictures of everywhere I've
been on the pc that I load in.
You've
travelled to many cities for performances. Where do you like
to travel
to most and why?
Home, Dallas because that's where my family and friends are, where it
all started. I have a good fan base here, everyone's so good
and
supportive.I could travel out to other countries and then come back
home and
see people who really appreciate what it is I'm trying to do.
What
are your plans for the summer? Will you be touring?
Let's see, I knew you were going
to ask
this
question. Going on a
vacation definitely, then have some shows in Myrtle Beach, SC, Ft.
Lauderdale, Orlando, New York, and Minneapolis, Minnesota. Some Radio
Disney Shows, a WalMart Show, then some others in Houston and Chicago.
Anything
big in the works you would like to tell your fans?
I'll be filming the video for my
new
song, "The Way I Do," it's a
darker
song about love slapping you right in the face, I want to portray that.
