Please tell us a
little bit about your families. Do you have any
siblings?
Phil: All of my family, immediate, extended, resides in the heart of
Long
Island. I have a younger brother, 2 years younger than me.
Paul: My dad was actually born in Italy believe it or not. I'm full
Italian.
He came from Italy and my mom is an Italian-American
lady, lovely lady.
My brother is a couple of years younger
than I am, he's still in school and
I live with four kittens in
central Long Island.
Where
did you guys
come up with the name "Air Tight?"
Phil: We were doing a Battle of the Bands and we were searching for a
name
because we had to submit some type of name but we didn't want
to just
pick anything. We sat for a while just thinking of names.
We were
looking at things in the room, just saying words that
came to mind. Air
Tight just fit, something about the room made us think of it.
Paul: We thought that it was great for us because we got together the
first time.
Phil came over , we jammed and we just had a great pocket,
ya know air pocket. It just stuck, we dig it.
When
did you start
playing your instruments?
Paul: I play keys. I actually started playing violin in school. I was
the male violin
player in the female orchestra and I did that for a
while. A couple years after
that, I was like it was great but
my fingers are too huge. I found the piano and
I just felt through it.
I grew up on Billy Joel, I heard what he was doing and tried to mimic
it and that's how I learned. I had been singing from when I can
remember. I always pretended to be
Michael Jackson like every kid did but yeah that's how I got into it.
Phil: I play the guitar. I learned at Toys R Us on those air
guitars. I was a huge fan of the Monkees. I used to watch
them on television. I would take my guitar and jump up on the
couch and sing like "hey hey we're the Monkees." I have a
couple of uncles that play the guitar, it's in the family.
I've always loved music,
I've always surrounded myself by it.
How
do
you all know
each other?
Paul: This is an interesting story. I met the bass player, Pete and the
drummer, Joe in high school. It started with us and we had just been
doing a number of projects throughout high school. When we got into
college we were the cover bands, original bands, everything. We were
doing a three piece thing, we were like Genesis. We started to cut
tracks and I wrote songs, we cut them for the three piece.
Then Phil fell into our hands basically.
Phil: Somehow networking through a project, mutual friends, as soon as
I left that, this was there. It just fell into our lap.
Paul: And like I said, the first time I met Phil, we were all jamming
together, we
played Bon Jovi stuff, just found a great niche. It was a time of
bonding for us and we just came about.
Who
is
the leader
of the group?
Paul: Normally I'm the lead singer, so if you want to say that. But I
think we all
take a leadership role in different aspects.
FTV: Because in many bands, they have a title, like the "party guy"
Paul: Ok! Well I would say our drummer is the party guy.
Phil: Well we all have our distinct personalities. I think that's what
separates us
from having a leader. I think they're going to come and
like Joe because he's Joe, and like Pete because he's Pete, just like
us for who we are.
Paul: Like with the Beatles, there was the "quiet one"
FTV: yes exactly
Paul: Yeah we model ourselves after those guys a lot.
How
would you
categorize your music?
Paul: In simplicity, it's pop/rock. But if you want to get deeper than
that it's
a lot more. We have such a wide range of influences like
anyone else that grew up in our time, our generation. Going back to
classic
rock, I have a lot of jazz influences, 80's rock which is great stuff
too and 90's alt (alternative) rock. Bring it all together
and we're pop/rock but if you go deeper, go beyond the surface , you'll
find The Police,
find The Beatles,
find Billy Joel,
Peter
Gabriel, Bon
Jovi.
You can
find everything there. It's going to hit a lot of people.
Phil: Just to add on that, I mean I think pop/rock is a very very broad
category
and I think naturally, each of us has our own influences. I
think the cool thing is that, we all have our distinct styles and when
you get the whole band, I just
feel it's an eclectic mix of pop/rock.
What
do
you guys do
for fun?
Phil: I don't have much fun. *laughs*
Paul: Hmm, what do I do in my
spare time. I love to sit with a great book on a really nice
day like today. I love to just write music. I love
writing. I love jamming with the guys, I love writing tunes,
I write a lot. Cooking, big thing of mine, and just great exercise and
that's pretty much my life.
What type of workout do you do?
Paul: I go to the gym a few times a week and I do yoga as well. I try
to
get toned up like everyone else is, and I do cardio but the yoga is
what keeps me mentally balanced and physically aware of myself, so it's
great.
Where
do you guys
want to go with your music?
Paul: We want to conquer the world like every band does, even if they
don't
want to say it, that's what we want to do.
